The academy players are youngsters who usually attend college of some kind and are not full time as such or at least that is what I thought happened. They are getting a lot more in their pocket than the average 17 year old out in the job market. If they commit themselves to the cause and prove they are worthy of the 10s of grands as you put it then they will get offered such a contract in due course. Its called promotion isnt it? Its like an apprenticeship - paid a pittence and once qualified you can demand a higher rate of pay??
