few weeks ago but one or two things stick in memory
we had a Christmas fixture against St Helens I think (though other events took over!)
and about 20 of us who`d been at Huddersfield New College had helped clear the snow off and cover it with straw to try and get it playable
Think the match was on a Saturday and that it was Christmas Eve cos I was in a "group" then and we were playing at Thongsbridge Drill Hall that night
Went up to ground at about 11-00 am with Mick Nasey ( Underbank RLFC) to clear off the straw but it was bitterley cold and the stand side touchline and about 15metres in hadnt had any sun on it --and the ref called it off -and rightly so
Mick said hed give me a lift into town on his BSA bantam and we turned right at Fartown bar and on Bradford Road towards town
At the junction by the Slubbers (there were no traffic lights then ) a car coming away from the cancelled match was edging out into the road but braked to let us past -but skidded on some black ice and hit us trapping my leg between front bumper and the motorbike and Mick was thrown off over the handlebars as we skidded into the wall at the top of Hillhouse Lane He was badly bruised and shaken - and I spent 4 months in the Infirmary with a broken knee (in traction) and ankle!
The other I remember was either 69 (or maybe 70) when we played Warrington away in the cup -about early Feb I think
The only way over was the A62 through Marsden -all other roads closed--and when we got to the pub at the top (Floating Light??) the blower had been through and the snow was as high as the Hanson coach
When we got to Warrington -there wasnt a spot of snow anywhere to be seen - but on the way back we drove through a blizzard and had difficulty getting back over the tops arriving back in Hudds about 9-00 pm (game finished 4-30pm)
They are two that stick in my memory though may be wrong re the exact details -Ive slept once or twice since then!
( waits for Examiner archives to correct!!)
