All the media talk, SKY etc, seems to be that Tomkins is the better player, but I'm still in the Myler camp. I thought he was easily the best halfback on the field yesterday. Pages, I think 5-7, see me & Rob_Wire disagreeing on the way forward for 2010, and I totally see both sides, I just thought it was worth a bit more debate now, and obviously pertinant given yesterday and we are still dogged by halfback problems.
Rob, I'm not trying to be smart here chief, I know it was one performance yesterday, one swallow and all that, but since this thread, it's popped into my head a few times, and I thought it'd be good to look at the youngsters, and their progression, as it was clear you deemed Tomkins a player of huge potential, and I've been interested how Eddie & Stevo seem intent on talking him up to all that'll listen.
On one of your posts, you sort of indicate that Myler may or not be SL class, has he done enough yet to convince that he is ? Would you be happier now if we chased him than say, January, when we discussed this ace ? Would folk in general feel the same way, is he now, a bit more 'proven' so to speak.
I thought there was a bit of debate to be had here.
Having seen Tomkins (TV) and Myler (real life) in the last day or so, Myler looks far, far more developed. Put it this way, Myler would be excellent in Wigan's team and I very much doubt Salford would have beaten us with Tomkins in the team. Maybe Tomkins will overtake him eventually but at the moment, no contest, Myler is better. In fact, it's worse than that, the fight wouldn't even be sanctioned.
The only reservation I have about Myler is his willingness to develop his all round game. By that I mean letting the ball go instead of going through the gap, it may be difficult to give way to desire of scoring tries for the good of the team.
Didn't William Webb Ellis pick up the ball and run, someone should really tell Rugby Union.

From what I've seen on Tomkins this season, he's stood out in one game only, the one where Stevo and Eddie sounded like his parents. Other than that, he's been ordinary.

Thats some comparison lol, Richie Myler was up against one of the worse teams in super league and Sam Tomkins was up against the team that have been the best side in SL this year.
If i remember right from the reports i read Richie Myler did nothing worthy of a mention in that St Helens game either, i wouldn`t want either at Warrington at this stage as both are still inexperienced rookies, were a team that needs experience at present and proven class. Salford have had little choice but to chance a rookie and Wigan are the same after Tim Smith has flopped so far.
I hope both make a top flight career in RL as ive nothing against either player, its just based on what ive seen of both and what ive been told about Tomkins i view him as having more potential especially attacking wise as Myler to me seems more of a support half back rather than a creator based on what ive seen of him overall.
Darren Lockyer -> Wigan Bound
Benji Marshall -> Good look getting him away from the NRL
Karmicheal Hunt -> Like he's gonna leave a NRL club to go to the worst team in SL

How long have Suntory had a team in SL?

Nah, you don't remember rightly. He was out with a broken hand.
Did you not think he was creative at the game yesterday Rob ? I thought he got them around the field very well. What I find odd is, I think Tomkins is nothing more than a finisher, of the two, I think Myler looks to have more to his game to be honest Rob. I'm yet to see Tomkins set up a Wigan try, but i've seen him make breaks. His service to Gleeson the other night was very poor indeed.
If it's a three year plan as per the thread you started Rob, why not sign Myler ? Why go with a one year fix in Lockyer ? Surely hen can develop his game along with the team in three years ?

I take it you didn`t watch the Quins v Wigan game on sky then as Tomkins set up a great try in that game where he broke through the Quins defence and raced about 40 yards and gave it to the support player to score.
Tomkins was the difference in that game between a Wigan win and a Wigan loss. I would expect more from Myler at this stage as he has played far more competetive games at a decent level than Tomkins has, overall i still say Tomkins will turn out the better player when he gets more competetive games under his belt.

Why quote me on Lockyer as i have been one of the very few on here who has been totally against making a move for Lockyer at the age he is at along with the serious injury he suffered fairly recently.

Was he heck, they were staring defeat in the face before Chad Randall threw that daft pass.
I know the break that you referring to, it was certainly his high point, I think it's that, that Eddie & Stevo are rolling out the PR Machine based on, he's done naff all since. I'm talking about ball in hand, going upto the line, and either putting somebody through or a deft kick behind the line etc, that's what I haven't seen him do yet, Myler did that to us yesterday.
Anyhow, this three year plan, why do you support the notion to have a one year fix at halfback, yet think it's a three year plan Rob ?
Also, what did you make of Myler yesterday Rob, i'm interested in your thoughts on how he went, what stood out for you, changed you perception of him perhaps, y'know ? Do you now think he is SL class because you had your doubts, you mentioned how Nanyn looked class in NL1, and how you though Myler may struggle.

If Tompkins hadn`t have came off the bench then Wigan would have lost that game, they were looking clueless in attack and running round in circles. After that break where he set up that try he gave Wigan a huge lift and momentum, before that Quins were looking the most likely winners in the first half.
Why say you have never seen Tomkins set up a try in one post then basically say in another post oh yeh he did set up a try.
