SATURDAY 20/6/09

Hull FC Reserves succumbed to a Salford City Reds late show going down by 36 points to 30.

It must be a long time since Salford completed the double again Hull at this level. Panic and a lack of game awareness saw Hull throw away a winning 6 point lead with 3 minutes to go. Salford exploited defensive frailties in Hull back division to take home the spoils.

What must be frustrating for coach Andy Last, is that he’s given the same half time team talk three weeks running only to see the same players make the same mistakes. What isn’t helping team confidence is the unavailability of fringe first team players to add strength and guidance to the reserves, making Last’s job harder. When there’s a lengthy first team injury list the reserves suffer because of the resulting shortage of numbers.

For Hull substitute props Danny Bell and Paul Shaw had good games. Bell in particular. They carried the ball well and always got over the gain line.

Hull started the game positively and scored in the first minute, when Dennis Tuffour went over in the corner from a Paul Stamp pass. However, Hull then lost their way, and allowed Salford to score the next two tries in the 12th minute to Marlon Alker, converted by Lewis Palfrey, and in the 20th minute through Brad Hargreaves. Salford increased their lead in the 29th minute when Dean McGilvery crossed in the corner.

Play was then held up for some time following a neck injury to Jack Briscoe. Salford lost concentration and allowed Hull to draw level before half time. Hulls scored tries in the 32nd minute, Nev Morrison touching down. Danny Nicklas added the conversion. In the 35th minute Hull drew level when Tuffour scored his 2nd try.

Half Time Hull Fc 14 Salford 14.

Directly after half time Hull took the lead, when in t he 42nd minute, Joe Donkin collected a cut out pass from prop Paul Shaw to score in the corner. In the 54th minute, a break by Josh Hodgson saw him halted just short of the try line. Jack Iley then burrowed his way over from acting half to score. Nicklas added the conversion.

Hull couldn’t maintain their momentum and in the 59th minute Salford scored when Eddie Vaughan supported a half break to score. Palfrey added the conversion.

In the 68th minute, Hull scored again when Iley crossed for his second try, using Sam Moa as a foil, to beat the defence. Nicklas converted the score.

Hull again couldn’t maintain their advantage and in the 71st minute, Salford narrowed the deficit to 6 points when Rob Foxen supported a Jason Walton break to score.

Hull tried to seal victory by twice attempting a drop goal rather than forcing Salford to play off their try line. The anxiety in the Hull team was plain to see and in the 78th minute, Salford drew level when a cut out pass saw Scott Bannan score. Palrey added the conversion.

In the final minute, Salford secured victory, when break by Walton was supported by Hargreaves, who scored his second try. Palfrey added the conversion.

Your 18's lost to Hull, but according to the reports Niall Evalds was outstanding scoring a hatrick and creating another try, maybe one to keep an out on.

He was shot in both arms , and both legs. He later died because of his injuries. Tommy 25th March 2007.

Salford City Reds are the National League Champions again and nobody will ever win a Grand Final more dramatically than this. Division One champions, Grand Final winners, winners of the Northern Rail Cup; everything their hearts desired. Down and out? Not a bit of it, they are never out. Memories are made of this forever and a day, Salford fans will ask "where did you watch the 2008 Grand Final? Where did you see John Wilshere save the day with the last kick of the ball?"
