Without wanting to speculate or ruin the other thread on Leon Walker's untimely death, but it started me wondering what sort of medical checks we make on players.

I know many of the sporting academies in USA check out atheletes for heart irregularities etc, do we ?

It seems that cases such as Marc Vivien Foe, Adam Watene had heart issues/problems that went undetected.

Should we do more?

Can we do more?

I’d say not much more can be done for freak occurences, if these cases are such. I’m know that doesn’t provide any solace but I think we all know that whatever preventative measures are taken, there’ll always be the odd tragedy. Perhaps the screening processes of the future will help in this regard.

Unfortunately it is normally refered to as 'sudden death syndrome' which is only detected when they die. So health checks probably wouldn't pick this up

Sad as it is its not uncommon in the world of sport and take football for example they cannot predict it with all the money, facilities and prestige the sport has at its disposal.

Correct me if Im wrong it happened to a city player a while back....Marc Viven Foe whilst playing for Cameroon.

It is also called marfans syndrome and there is screening avaiable for it. My cousin is screened regularly becasue someone on the other side of the family dides from it. I don't know about this case obviously (still don't know what happened accident or just collapse) but I do think sports could do more to screen generally.

The Americans screen for it, there is also a charity for these things called something like CRY. It was set up by a woman who's son played Tennis in the uk got a scholarship to the USA and underwent tests and was discovered to have the hart problems that led to 'sudden death syndrome'

This is a cross sport issue.

I guess it depends on how much it costs. If it’s not astrononmical, and doesn’t take long to do (so there wouldn’t be a huge backlog of screenees), then why not bring it in?
