"in effect," not similar. There was no trial or adjudication by a judge or jury, because the trial did not proceed. The charges were dropped by the court, on police recommendation, before a trial could take place. It meant that Mr Hazem El Mazri had no case to answer. He was thus spared the agony and expense of a trial.
