Can anybody explain to me why the BBC limits its live internet radio coverage of Super League games to UK listeners only and if there is an alternative online to hearing live broadcasts instead of having to watch delayed games on free-to-air television down under.

Yeah, the BBC has internet broadcst rights for the UK only, I'd check some of the local commercial stations streams when the matches are on. they may not filter out foreign listners during games.
In Hull KCFM cover both the City's SL teams with full match commentry.

It's much the same when I sometimes try and listen to American radio feeds when listening to sports and also watching video content. There are ways around it though
