St George, wearing the district colours of red and white, played in the NSWRL's Third Grade competition in 1910, and formed a President's Cup team in 1911. The best way to determine the percentage of the local town population who attend games is to average the attendance at Les Catalans and Harlequins matches each year, because they each bring less than 100 fans.
If I am not mistaken these teams result in a crowd of around 6,500.
I'm not totally convinced that averaging the attendance at two of the least attractive fixtures is "the best way".
22,000 out of a population of around 250,000 so somewhere around the 8/9% mark. For a reasonably big city and a sport competing with premier league football that is very good imo.
