Well, if you want to know "erm", then you could have quoted what he actually said, though I'm not surprised you didn't. But what he explained was:

We would (I think) be in agreement ( ) that the team should nt, actually, need a kick up the backside, but the point he very clearly made, and which to be charitable you may have missed, is simply this: a player or players might over a period of days after a narrow or not too drastic defeat, persuade themselves that it wasn't that bad, or that there were understandable or acceptable explanations for it. Whereas after a fairly unmitigated disaster like that (which McNamara is the first to admit it was) no such delusion is possible.
I'd say it was a fair point.
