Hiya,
I have to do a short presentation on st helens rlfc to pass my access course, and need a few comments from fans about why the st helens v wigan match is so important to you (rivalry etc)

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Its a tough one because in a way it has changed and the rivaly with warrington is in a way as strong now as the rivalry with Wigan.

However, to me living where I do and close to wigan I think having grown up surrounded with Wigan fans its always great to get a win over them just to see the response from the fans, a lot of who still think they are the best thing since sliced bread.

Stopped reading at this point! Are you on crack?Seriously?
No matter how people try to play it down Saints V Wigan is THE biggest fixture for any fan from each side! Its certainly the first fixture i look for when the list is leaked......i mean comes out.

Agreed a total nonsense.

It is but recently for me it has lost some of its sparkle, I still look forward to it but not in the same way as I used to for some reason. It is still one of the fixtures I look forward to the most but I don't get the same excitement about it any more.

Other fixtures pale into comparison.

Leeds although they are the best in the competition and Warrington who are clearly not would probably be mentioned by some people as being as important and as big fixtures.

They are not.

Those people are clearly wrong.

In the grand scheme of things for St Helens RLFC one fixture matters above all others and that is against that lot from over Billinge Hill.

For people like myself and DD, we live in N-le-W, which is nearer to Warrington than Wigan. We have friends who support Warrington, so there is plenty of rivalry there. I love beating Warrington, it brings me great pleasure.

The day we lose to Warrington will hurt more than losing to Wigan these days (unless it's a final obviously), as I will never hear the bloody end of it.

any saints fans who grew up in the late eighties and early ninties was brought up with (rightly) very smug wigan fans and we were very much the poor cousins. This led to massive resentment and as times changed in 96 saints fans reacted as they were due years of payback. At the of start of superleague wigan were a real force so the rivalry increased again. Now we are far more dominant but the feeling you get from beating wigan is the best there is.

I agree with the opinion that the Wire, despite their lack of success are our local rivals.

The proof is in the amount of threads on the forum. Go back to any of the recent Dire derbies and the forum would be strewn with posts, from about three weeks to go. We have a derby against the Goons soon and there are no posts at all, despite there being several on theirs. I suppose the tussel with our other big than Wigan rivals Leeds is next week has something to do with it.

I suppose my hatred for Wigan might return should the gloating be bad after next Thursday's game, which common sense suggests we will lose.
