Just watched the first episode of Series 2.

I reckon Derek is a bit of a masterpiece, played superbly by Gervais. Absolutely superb first series. Have to say I was a bit disappointed by the opener, I thought it relied a bit too much on Kevin's smuttiness, and was sad to see Karl Pilkington go (if he has), but it is still a rare gem in the schedules. Beautifully written and well observed. Just hope Ricky hasn't run out of ideas.

I work in LD and I find the programme uncomfortable and distasteful, particularly on the back of Ricky Gervais' attempts to justify his use of the word 'mong' recently.

The Office was brilliant but in my view, he's done nothing of merit since; it's a no from me.

We agree on something.

I think Derek is one of those one season sitcoms - another example being Benidorm.

I don't think it was distasteful and was fairly sensitive considering it's a comedy.

However it was soon going to run out of steam and near to the knuckle does become depressingly distasteful very quickly as stated. The first episode of the second series was instantly flawed by the over use of the grotesque alcoholic character for shock value and cheap laughs.

Series one was fine for me but that's where it should have stopped, it can only degrade from now on. Not for me either.

The first series was brilliant but I agree that the second has lost its way a little.

I don't think Gervais will ever reach the dizzy heights of The Office Christmas special, one of the greatest pieces of sitcom television I've ever seen.

By 'attempts to justify' you presumably mean 'apology for'.....?

What was actually said wrote:‘Mrs Clark asked Gervais if she could ask him some questions, and in the following conversation yesterday the comedian admitted that his use of the word had been ‘naïve’.

The campaigner said: ‘I now understand that you didn’t and wouldn’t intentionally hurt anyone. Do you understand why people got upset by it?’, to which Gervais replied: ‘I do now. Never dreamed that idiots still use that word aimed at people with Down’s Syndrome. Still find it hard to believe.’

I saw that too - I don't buy it; he's an intelligent bloke and I find it hard to believe that he didn't understand the connotations of the word when he used it.

Either way - it's not worth an argument; I don't like the programme because I find it distasteful - I think that's my right.
