Suffered from the same problem that many American shows have, and that is they don't know how to write an ending to a series - They just allow programmes to meander onwards, usually going over old ground and becoming very tedious in the process.

'Heroes' was a definite example, 'True Blood' is another and there are increasing signs that 'The Walking Dead' is heading the same way.

The recent episodes, with the various little groups on the run after fleeing the prison, have been absolutely dire - Looks like they have ran out of ideas about where to take this. The writers don't even seem to be able to decide which characters to zone in on. They are definitely on a 'winging it' exercise.

Back on topic - hopefully the writers will have had plenty of time to get Heroes back on track and get it back to how it was in the first 2 seasons before the writers strike stuffed it up.

Also stuffing it (and others) up is the uncertainty over cancellation in US tv.

The very first series of 24 had a resolution of sorts after about 8 hours, just in case it wasn't continued with. When it was a success the writers had to come up with a "development" to keep the original plot going for the remaining hours. I suspect Heroes set off with a season (grrrr) planned but when it was a success the ideas to keep it going just weren't there. If a series was given a clear number of episodes at the outset, based on a properly developed idea, the drop off wouldn't happen. TV execs seem keen to milk programmes for as long as they can.
