What an absolute shame, Syd and Shoey were my all time favourites at Leeds .I was lucky enough to visit Perth a couple of weeks ago and was thinking about Syd ,wishing he would walk around the corner so I could say hello and buy him a pint .
Never saw him play live, but he was the coach when I first started going to HQ. Sobering to think that he was amongst the scorers the last time we won the ashes. Sad to lose these legends.
Caught the very end of his playing career when he came back after breaking a leg (i might have actually been there when he broke it, if he was the player who was dropped by the stretcher bearers). Regardless he didn't play much after I started watching. He did however coach those great cup winning sides of 77 and 78 that kept me coming back ever since. RIP Syd.

I saw Syd near the end of his playing days. I remember going to my first away match at Odsal , think it was 1973 in Players no. 6 trophy, Syd got sent off after about 15 minutes after taking out a Bradford player late, I don’t know if something had happened but it was a clear red card, Leeds still won fairly easily with a young Les Dyl on the right wing.
Syd had some guile and class but he was also pretty dangerous. I remember Doug Laughton telling a tale about being hit late by Arthur Beetson in 1970 , Laughton hit Beetson late a few minutes later and he went down, Syd kicked him in the head.
Lovely guy off the pitch, I saw all 7 finals we played and won when he was coach, thanks for the memories Syd , happy days
Apologies for the lateness of this, but the club's memorial service to Syd has been going on for the last 45 mins. He was a player much before my time, but when he passed, I could tell it had affected my dad, so it affected me. It's been lovely listening to some of the tributes; we're very blessed to be part of a club who does these events so well. I assume it'll be up to watch after the event, so it's well worth a watch when you have time.
