He wouldn't have kept Roby out if the hooker role for 6 seasons, and score about a third more tries (in less games), featured in the Super League Dream Team more times, and voted in as hooker for the "Greatest Ever Super League Team" if Roby was better.
The 2006 St Helens team would destroy the current one. I don't know where people get that the current team is the greatest Super League or Saints team ever. They looked clueless without Roby's leadership when things started to go wrong on Friday.
I'm a lifelong Leeds fan, but I find the "doing down" of the current Saints team tedious. The facts are: They have won four in a row, they have finished top three out of four times, they have lost a handful of games (some of them when putting out weakened sides) and they have just beaten the Australian champions in Australia, something only the great Wigan side of the 90's could manage. Revisionist blue and amber recollections regarding the standard of the league when Leeds were top dogs don't hold water. There were a few good sides, many average ones, and some absolute dross. Leeds fans need to stop living in the past and focus on now. Rant over.

Why am I living in the past? Because I think Cunningham was far better than Roby as a hooker? His stats prove that.
I'm not denying the current Saints team are by far the best team in the league at the moment, but I do not agree that they are the best English RL team ever, the best Super League era team, or even the best ever Saints team. Compare the 2006 Grand Final winning St Helens Squad against today's and you'll see that man for man they were a better team.
I'm not living in the past, but I'm also not forgetting the past either. I'm also not going to pander to the new Saints fans who truly believe that their current team are unbeatable and the GOATs because they started watching RL last year.

Keep your feet on the ground and do try to be less hysterical. Most posters on here and red vee are generally fair minded. Sculthorpes after match summary along with Wellens was fair and reasonable. It was only one game at the start of a long season. As for Roby without doubt he has been the stand out hooker in the super league era. Both on and off the field, as for Welsby he is still young, potentially he has the talent for a successful career. Unfortunately at the moment he is a bit petulant. Perhaps he should use Roby as a role model. Ref Dodds , have mixed veiws about him. It may have escaped your attention regarding end of the season ,but other teams may have a say as to the position of saints and the rhinos.

I'm making a general point. There is a general trend amongst some Leeds fans to dismiss this Saints team. That said, you are presenting your opinions as facts. You might say the 2006 team was better man for man, but Saints fans might disagree. The facts are: Saints are statistically better than any other side I the history of SL. Are they truly, I don't know, but if they aren't I don’t know who is.

The post from someone who "talked to a Leeds fan" who backed up every moan they had throughout the game is hilarious! Of course you did son, of course you did! I spoke to a Saints fan who said we were by far the better team, that Welsby is a man-child, Hurrell should be banned for 10 games and Jon Wilkin is an embarrassment to commentating!
Just had a quick scan through some of the comments. Brilliant. It was Mylers fault Hurrell got sent off. Play acting. It was Myler obstructing Sironen, after he passed the ball. Where was Sironen meant to go? Leeds cheated and it was all the refs fault.

Comparing current teams to former teams is obviously subjective. You can go on forever with endless comparisons, what is undisputed is saints remarkable transformation after the Cunningham failure. Cunningham was a superb player and a decent man it must have been tough to end his saints career in that fashion. Thank goodness Kevin Sinfield managed to avoid that situation.

One or two say that, the majority are in the " we messed up and were not good enough defensively " camp. Our two second rowers have form for yellow cards and should of learned from last year and it was a red.
