And I think it matters a lot if Mellor is leaving as this year is all about finding out who can and should form the basis of the squad next year and beyond. We need to know if Walters is going to be part of the future or to move onto the next youngster after him.
That’s what the reserves, dual registration and sending players out on loan is for, not Super League games. Regardless of whether a player is a “Gordon Tallis” or not, games are won and lost by narrow margins, we select the best possible 17 that we can.
It’s an even more crowded back row as Martin can move back there.
Given there’s probably only one bench spot for an out and out back row, Walters offloading game and ability to offer something slightly different off the bench gets him the nod over the very average Mellor.
I reckon it’ll be Bodene and Martin to start. Bench of Dwyer, Prior, Walters and O’Connor. Though I’d like to see Johnson get a run as well now we’ve got something resembling a pack.

Whether or not a player is contracted or not for next season shouldn’t come into the selection criteria, pick the best player to do the job and get the win, end of. Walters may end up a better player but right now I’d say Mellor gets the bench spot.
I'm saying that Walters and O'connor are here next year, Mellor is a bit meh and I'd rather see investment in them. If Mellor was a good player who was leaving I'd play him.
I'm with Seth. If Mellor was a better player and was likely to mean the difference to winning and losing I'd pick him every game even if he was leaving. He's simply not so good that his presence is likely to make a material difference compared to Walters or pretty much any other back row option we have. Hence my admittedly facetious Gorden Tallis analogy.
Always liked mellor at Huddersfield. Will get good effort from him and will tackle his heart out. Will want to put in a good show against his former side too so I’m happy if you don’t play him and play a youngster instead! Just came on to let you know that the rope walk pub is closed, but would suggest you get down early due to road works and road closures in the Leeds road area currently causing chaos! However the club have been putting on a little festival around the ground this year with a few pop up food stalls and bars, (cheaper beer than in the stadium itself) and live music and entertainment going on outside the stadium at the opposite end to the away end so make your way down that end after you arrive- the weather forecast is good!

I would only play Mellor if we are short in the back row.As you and others have said if he was top draw he would still be playing but his performances of late have only been average.

Agree on Mellor. Been very disappointed with him. O'Connor looks impressive and has a fantastic workrate. Walters needs a chance. Certainly has the physical attributes, just need to see if he has the desire. I'm not really sure what Mellor brings. Would we be bothered if Mellor didn't play again? Not me.
If you wouldn’t select Mellor on merit as other players are better that’s fair enough. What I object to is selecting another player who isn’t as good simply because they are younger, or contracted for 2023.
Personally I think Mellor is the best option for a bench spot as things stand, Walters and O’Connor would benefit from playing the season out in the Championship at Bradford, which I think they will end up doing if we can keep near to a full strength team back.

yes St Andrews car park is open, as far as im aware its £5 per car, dont go to town avenue car park as that is car park ticket holders only - it will be a mess getting in and out though due to the road works and road closures so leave yourself plenty of time. If you don't mind a bit of a walk you can avoid the mess by avoiding the A62 altogether coming off at junction 24 instead of junction 25 and parking on great northern street or alder street - but be aware that area is "red" district at night!
