Agree Jim, very tough decisions here to be made. i like what Blease has had to say on this so far, his approach is very refreshing, not wittering on talking in riddles like GH. I have a good feeling we can trust him in this one
Some of the best appointments in Super League have been relatively short, it's the quality that matters. Look how Murray, McGuire and Holbrook all got their clubs turned around in a short space of time. It's that type of appointment we need with Blease already looking for the next guy if the NRL come calling. Sound's like Arthur is available and could be in position relatively quickly. If that could facilitate some new front rowers so much the better.
I think Rowley is the favourite. It's always a risk bringing an Aussie over. Rowley is proven in SL and can seemingly get the best out of a rag tag bunch. Probably what we need right now.
Willie Peters would be my number 1 choice, but that's not gonna happen.
I know it will be unpopular as it's old boys club, but I would also be looking at Danny Mags as assistant.
In answer to your question, Jim, I'd be happy with either Rowley or Arthur. There's a certain seductive alure in bringing in a head coach from the NRL, and he's clearly achieved quite a bit in the toughest RL competition in the world. My only concerns are the usual ones around homesickness, not knowing the ins and outs of the English competition etc. In terns of Rowley, while I get peoples opinions about him not coaching at a big club, I don't buy into them. I've really enjoyed watching Salford play over the last few years and if he can replicate that (with a far bigger budget) at Leeds, we could have something special. I suspect we'd also have a much greater chance of keeping Rowley at the club than Arthur if we started to see success on the field. In summary, despite the wow factor Arthur would bring, I lean slightly towards Rowley.
Of course the coach needs to be top drawer, bags of experience, been there, done that etc. But we need the next perm coach in now. An interim writes this season off and puts us back to the beginning from next. Arthur certainly meets the criteria and is available. So does Rowley, and if he makes the move now, fair enough.
Demetriou is still a leftfield choice; he's familiar with English conditions etc. and has a point to prove after Souths. He was heralded as the golden boy of coaching just a couple of years ago. Has his star fallen completely..?
Jason Ryles is sometimes mentioned in Aus but another assistant, and I think we need an established head coach now.
Sounds like Arthur is interested at the right price/opportunity, and Rowley sounds like he'd also consider, so perhaps this is a straight shoot-out between the two in reality.
