You know what - watching a lot of the NRL this year I've seen just as many penalties at the ruck as I have in SL - often ones that could go either way. The difference is that this doesn't make the game too stop-start - they just get on with it without throwing their hands up and moaning at the referee, a la Wilkin himself. Also the commentators don't blab on about the decision for the next five minutes.
As a general observation the SL ptb is currently blighted by both sets of players not just the defending team. While there may well be too much wrestling, holding up then putting to ground late there is also a lot of diving around by the team in possession and almost no adherance to playing the ball correctly. Frankly SL is difficult to watch these days (especially in comparison to the NRL), coaches need to sit down with the referees to sort this nonsense out and the players need to clean up and clear the ruck.
Watched a game from the NRL on Premier Sports on demand last Saturday and switched straight to the second half of Wakefield V Salford and it was like travelling back to the seventies.
The increasing difference between the super league and NRL salary cap has lowered the quality of overseas players and as a result lowered the quality of super league. On the plus side I think this has helped the bottom teams compete with teams at the top.
Great game tonight wire vs saints! I want that quality every game, not just a one off or a few every season. Even with a number of injuries for both teams, a lot for saints, both played some fantastic attacking rugby and defended hard. No excuse for leeds. We competed for 50 minutes in world club challenge playing a great brand of rugby, want more of that!
Funnily enough been to a few championship games and thoroughly impressed, extremely tough and not afraid to try something innovative, even if its a bit of a slower game. Jimmy lowes recently said in an interview on rugby am that bradford have a lot slower play the balls on purpose, he's coaching them to get off the tackle quickly to prepare for a quicker ruck when in the middle 8's, interesting way of dealing with the ruck speed difference in super league and championship.
