Someone (I can't recall who) was wondering if they'd be able to get cheap stuff from Zavvi.
The answer is maybe, full story here:

Zavvi never been the same since it stopped being a Virgin.

The season starts in October. Until then, don't panic!

Until I heard they were in administration I had never heard of them - just shows how often I go shopping for music/film - I get my musical needs from Napster and I get my dvd's from that Aladdin Sane bloke

"Head Entertainment - a business which is jointly led by former Zavvi chief executive Simon Douglas. Head is also buying all remaining Zavvi stock. "

Looks like they won't be having a sale .

Napster was much more fun in the good old days, when it was free :)

Went in Zavvi today and its like a Jumble Sale. You can't find anything as its all over the place. Might be better if the had an index of the stock.

I was interested in picking up a DVD "Just another Saturday" but didn't know where to start so walked out.

Click on Amazon and Hey Presto

Just to clear a few things up, i worked in both Virgin Megastores and Zavvi until 6 months ago and know what is & has been going on.

At the moment the store IS a jumble sale.
This is because until yesterday they were receiving stock from every other Zavvi store in the Country that closed, around 100. Leeds was one of the last to be decided upon because it made money anyway.

Regarding the state of the place, working in such a massive store with around 750,000 items is not easy to index when stock arrives every couple of hours and when customers are treating it like they're vultures it's almost impossible.
It would have cost more to return it to the suppliers who, due to EUK[woolworths] going bust, was now the producing companies like Universal, Sony BMG et al.

As for virgin, like most kids growing up in music, working in a Record shop
was a childhood ambition! It was good at first but as the 00's rolled in, it was trading on past glories and re-brand after re-brand came to nothing.
When the MD took it from Richard Branson they had to use a new name and although it was a random one which most people didn't know, it was giving HMV a run for its money and often outperforming it in many departments. Through no fault of Zavvi did its demise come about.

That is eveident through the MD, who i've met and respect, again refusing to leave the business and market.
He's bought 8 stores to start again. At least it prevents HMV from having a total monopoly.

Suffice to say I'm incredible happy that 24 of my friends ain't lost their jobs and Leeds'll have a shop, albeit called 'Head Entertainment', that will have friendly, knowledgable staff selling you things you don't REALLY need!

The problem with Zavvi was that its prices were way to high to justify buying anything from them. An example of this was the season one box set of The Wire, which cost, even when they were in the middle of their closing down sale, £25 while at Amazon you can buy it for £15. Who is going to shop at a place that charges £10 more for an item.
In conclusion, I pretty much buy everything from Amazon these days anyway, unless it is some impulse dvd buying in the 4 for £20 range at HMV.

I agree with the comparison with amazon, that's a given.
The same as any item though, be it clothing, hardware or equipment and tools.
Amazon wins every time due to it's numerous avenues of supply.
The same doesn't happen with Music retail stores.

And we all know why Asda can sell a new release DVD at £6/£7 that Z/HMV are selling at £13.

When it comes to comparing Z & HMV, it's generally tit-for tat. Unless someone looks round both stores FULLY and can genuinely make comparisons on ALL stock prices you will never know that at some points in time Z were more expensive than HMV in some areas and HMV more expensive than Z in others.
I unfortunately have had to do that before.

What's wrong with me today? I never felt like defending the company whilst i was there!
