Cougars’ historian John Pitchford has taken a look through the club records to what recent meetings between the clubs have yielded and has turned up some interesting facts.
The last time Keighley beat Castleford away from home will be 42 years to the day on Sunday and that was at
Wheldon Road
– the previous name of Castleford’s stadium – on the 5th April 1967 when they won 8-6!
The previous meeting between the two clubs was on 13th February 1994 in the Challenge Cup when the Tigers came to CougarPark and won 54-12.
The Cougars team that day was: Johnny Walker; Andy Stephenson, Carlton Farrell, Phil Stephenson, Wayne Race; Martin Wood, Andy Eyres; Brendan Hill, Jason Ramshaw, Ian Gately, Steve Hall, Kevin Marr, Mark Brooke-Cowden. Subs: Joe Berry, Jeff Butterfield.
Castleford’s team was: Graham Steadman; St John Ellis, Richard Blackmore, Grant Anderson, Simon Middleton; Tony Kemp, Mike Ford; Lee Crooks, Richard Russell, Martin Ketteridge, Tony Morrison, Ian Smales, Tawera Nikau. Subs: Andy Hay, Keith England.
Just to jog your memory Mark Brooke-Cowden as a former New Zealand All Black who was signed from Leeds while big Brendan Hill is now a member of the Cougars’ coaching staff.
In the Castleford team that day you had Graham Steadman now working in Irish rugby union, Mike Ford who is now working alongside Martin Johnson in the England rugby union team management, a former Keighley player the late St John Ellis, a Keighley coach to be Lee Crooks and several Great Britain stars.
The score at halftime was 10-18 while the Cougars try scorers were Eyres, Hall and Brooke-Cowden. Walker landed one goal. The match attendance was 5,850 and the referee was Colin Morris from Huddersfield.
