Much as I'm averse to giving anyone associated with the gooners any credit it's not as if he's naming the stadium after himself but rather after the name of his sports business.
It was named the JJB stadium at a time when he was the man behind JJB sports. He's now sold that business and so has decided to rename the stadium in line with his current business.
Wigan fans shouldn't be too critical of a bloke who got them out of a serious hole.
In the good old days when Wigan were winning everything it transpired that they did so by spending way more than they were earning and running up a debt that would make the current debts of any SL clubs look like pocket change.
Dave Whelan just happened to be building a shiny new stadium for his beloved football club and agreed to let the all conquering rugby club become co-tennants. This allowed Wigan to sell Central Park to developers for a sum that more or less cleared their debts and to start playing in a state of the art new stadium from whence they could look down their noses at other clubs such as Cas not fortunate enough to have a local benefactor prepared to build them a new stadium.
I've no doubt some Wigan fans will take issue with some of the above, but give or take a few minor details this is pretty much correct!
