Ronnie Campbell, Stan Wall, Billy Thompson, Mick Beaumont, our Jim, Brian Galtress, ooooh there's loads and all of them had character. Holdsworth used to ref us when I played colts & A team rugby on his way up to first team and he was OK liked to chat with the players during the game, Ian McGregor was the same when he reffed Pennine league but he just wanted a supping partner 'til his mrs came to pick him up after the game, 'cos she had the car !!!
My dads mate used to work with Billy and he tells funny stories about him all the time. There's one in which Jim mills is playing for Widnes and is being tackled, as he's about to hit the deck the opposing scrum half comes running in and cracks Jim. Realising what a mistake he's made the scrum half runs upto Billy and says 'send me off'!. Billy, who has obviously seen what happens, replies to the scrum half 'i'm not going to send you off.........you'll be going off but i'm not going to send you off'!
Minutes later Jim mills catches up with the scrum half and he's going off on a stretcher!!!
