Why do people get excited about statues? Firstly we had the Uni students in UK getting excited about Cecil now its spread to Charlottesville and Robbies statue. Just leave them for the pigeons to sit on. What other aspects of history will be expunge? |

I think people have every right to debate whether or not a monument to an individual is appropriate in a public space or not, or even protest it. Times change, and with it so do opinions and the morality of the public. Nobody is trying to "expunge history", but some monuments belong in a museum and not in public in a place of honour, especially ones that represent something so abhorrent and so far from the values held by the current public, slavery for example. |

Should the Iraqis in Baghdad have left that one of Saddam up? Or all those ones of Lenin, Stalin and Co that were around Eastern Europe? As DGM says times change. There's no changing the history that I can see. |

Unemployment at a long time low, business booming, reduction in crime......... isn't that what Wiggy said he would focus on, bringing contentment to the communities, reducing social unrest? |

Don't you just leave them there as a reminder to no repeat the mistakes of the past? Most of the ones I've seen I have no idea who they are or why they are there, but they are a representation of a snapshot in time, so I can't really get "offended" by them. |

Have to agree with that. It's a modern phenomenon which festers on social media and the Internet. It only takes one do-gooder to point out a remote reason as to why people should be shocked and offended then all of a sudden there's a massive wave of spleen-venting posts and tweets, and numerous petitions launched as to why said thing has to be eradicated from history. |

It's not about eradicating history - it's about acknowledging that the world has moved on, social and cultural attitudes have changed, and as such, some periods of history are no longer appropriate to celebrate or commemorate in a public space; there are no statues of Hitler in Germany for example - but there are memorials to his victims. The faux outrage of the anti PC brigade is a modern scourge; PC is a way of describing being decent and respectful to each other - I don't see how anyone can be anti that? |
