Looking into taking the father-in-law to the Grand Prix this year as he's into F1 and was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice on things like the best places to get tickets for? Or any advice in general as none of us have ever been before. Obviously looking at the cheaper end of the market but unsure whether to go with General Admission or pay more.

I've tried the Other Sports board but thought I'd try here too!

On heading down, look into parking at Hinton Airfield, and stopping at the pub (I am sure they are still doing rooms since it's changed hands) at Hinton in the Hedges called the Crewe Arms. They do a bus from the Airfield to Silverstone, you cannot drive around the area as the police cordon it all off.

My mum lives in Hinton, so pretty familiar with the routine.

Thanks for that! Not looking for accommodation, will just drive there and back on the day, but useful to know for parking and decent pubs!

Forgot to say. If you like taking photos then take loads of batteries and lots of film/memory cards. I took a tonne of photos (over 1000) and I didn't have time/inclination to delete all of the ones that had either nothing or a tiny tip of nose or wing on the weekend itself :)

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy him a 50" HD TV and a Sky subscription?

Easily. I'm told it's not the same though.

Not sure about cheaper but definitely easier!

It's going to be as a birthday present from the whole family, he's always been really interested in F1 and it's 75th birthday this year so without wanting to sound harsh he might not have many more opportunities to actually go to one!

If you are driving set off early as the 'motorists' who go there are not the brightest and tend to block the M1 as I found when drining to watch London Broncos play in Leicester once.
