Post subject:  censorship at Hull University.

http://hull.tab.co.uk/2013/11/19/huu-bans-the-sun/

My university union has decided, through a vote, to ban the Sun from being sold on campus. I didn't know about it until a facebook page (a comical page run by a Hull student, nothing to do with anything official) posted it earlier today, probably because as a first year I don't mix with any of the union lot and they don't seem to care about announcing anything past their inner circles and just wait for it to filter out by word of mouth.

Personally, I wouldn't wipe my booty with the sun, but I do not see any reason to ban it, especially given that the union shop sells every major rag and all the glossy gossip mags which are full of just as much derogatory vitriol (you'll see in the link above a big deal has been made about the page 3 girls and how it's demeaning to women, which I agree with to an extent but like I said, don't ban it).

The point I'm trying to make is that the university is a place full of adults (in a legal sense) who can make up their own minds about what they want to read, or not read. And no one should have the power to tell them they can't read a certain paper over another.

Any thoughts?

It's a bonkers move and the people who did it should try to grow up.

And that's coming from, like you, someone who has no liking for the rag in question or for Murdoch.

The same reaction on local radio today from plans by Leeds Carnegie SU to do the same following a similar stunt from Bradford SU (or was it Huddersfield).

Strange because when ah wor nobbut a lad all the talk in the Union bar (drank there but never privileged to be a proper student, just one on a knock-off card) was for free speech and how when we were all grown up things would be different, seems we were wrong.

Yup. If this is the daftest thing your SU does during your time there you can officially consider yourself lucky. :)

Oh I'm looking forward to seeing what they can pull out the bag next to make the union a 'safe place' for everyone. It's almost exciting.

Some people define "functional literacy" as the ability to read The Sun. So, perhaps the reason for its sale being stopped at you Union is due to lack of demand?

My concerns are that tomorrows highly educated professionals would want to read it

don't worry, most wouldn't, but we do have a rather large sports department.

They may be academically more talented but that doesn't mean your average student unionista knows what the fook the time of day is.
I've come into contact with some of them and many aren't particularly bright.
Anyway, let the middle classes read Jezza Clarkson.
They enjoy and and deserve him.

A quiz -:

1, Keir Hardie - Shipyards aged 13
2, David Camoron - Eton/Oxford University
3, Aneurin Bevan - Mineworks aged 13
4, Gideon Osborne - St Magdalens/Oxford University

Q, Name me the two intellectual pygmies?

Nota bene :- Hull twinned with Liverpool and Freetown Sierra Leone.
Ban the fooking shitrag.

Back in the day a suitable student response to this would be to wallpaper the Dean's office with Page 3 and put a pair of fake breasts on the statue of the founder.

Now students just moan about it on forums.
