Total free from restraint capitalism, you know it makes sense.

No story here. Pretty much every petrol station I go to has a shop with an off-licence. It doesn't ever make me think a can or bottle for the road would be good.

You can nip to the garage to pick up a 4 pack or a bottle of vino to drink at home, but a Weatherspoons will undoubtably be aiming at getting people in for a meal mid journey and the temptation for some to have 'just one' might be to hard to resist. I don't know about others, but I certainly think my driving would be impaired by even a single glass of red or a pint of lager.

Well we've had the whole "impaired" debate many times and technically obviously any drug or medication you take at any time has some effect but personally I feel having one pint is not relevant to my driving. If at the local they have a weak beer, say up to 3.6, I might even have two - as I know I would be safely under the limit, and won't be driving a long distance or at any speed.
I would certainly choose not to drink any alcohol when on a motorway journey, but the law in this country is people who choose to have up to the legal limit of alcohol while driving can legally do so, and for almost everyone, they would be legal after a single glass of red or a pint of lager.
If I was Weatherspoons I think it would be a good idea to have a rule that they don't serve alcohol to the driver of the party. Maybe they will.

The rst of Europe have been more 'grown up' about alcohol consumption than the UK have for years.
