Is there a best time of year, and place in Scotland, to see the Northern Lights?? Looking at going up in early-mid October but just wondering what the chances of seeing them are??

Saw them once on Skye in September, but it's rare for them to be seen that far south, apparently

As good a chance in October as any, as the skies tend to be clear. But there were some shows in July, it mainly depends on solar activity and what the Sun ejects our way. Which is nowadays very closely monitored and plenty of advance warning is available. Try THIS site for the local space weather and predictions.

Get as far north as you can and way from major towns and cities.

There are a lot of conditions that need to be right for them to be seen this far south and a good 60% of it is down to luck.

Well we are looking at b&b's in Thurso area, so don't think we could get any further north!!

Read a few decent things about seeing them in Inverness, but thought that would be too much of a major area for lighting that wouldn't help in seeing them...
