Passed away, aged 89.

To my mind, one of the very best. I used to love his show with Hattie.

Sad times. One of the great writers and performers. The scene in Sykes with him and Hattie handcuffed together trying to eat their tea... Still cracks me up.

Very funny man and for anyone who hasn't yet seen the series "Sykes", then you are missing a chunk of British comedy history.

Also his autobiography "If I don't write this then no-one else will" is a genuinely good book to read, unlike so many celebrity biogs its not full of tales of how good he was or how good other people thought he was or even what he succeeded in becoming, and its not even a funny read, but instead its a genuine biography about his life and in particular about his childhood in Lancashire in the 1920s, anyone studying social history should definitely have a read of it.

A lovely film, I really must get a copy. (I guess most young people wouldn't get the same kick out of spotting all the many faces in it)
My dad used to watch it on the occasional Sunday afternoon with heaps of his grandchildren draped all over him and the armchair.
They all used to love it and watched it time and again.

Aye, Sykes was a star ... a very gentle star, none of his comedy had even the faintest trace of malice in it.
The episode of Sykes where he and Hattie carry on with their bus route despite having no bus ... surreal and banal at the same time .. and so funny.

The whole thing is available on a popular video-sharing website.

I'm sorry he's dead. And he did come across as a nice bloke. And I know he was a pretty good writer. I just didn't find him funny. Sorry. RIP
