My wife is selling her old banger for cash to a dodgy bloke who saw it on the drive.

He is going to pay cash.

Other than filling details in on the regsitration document and sending it to the DVLA is there anything else i should do.

Do we need proof of his ID or address or just take the money and let him have the car.

Are there any cons or dodgy practices i should watch out for.

Ie if he drives it off tonight robs a bank and gets 4 speeding tickets before documents go to the DVLA are we still responsible.

Any advice appreciated.

You are still responsible for the car until you have informed the DVLA of the transfer.

Don't let him go for a test drive without you.

Draw up a quick contract and get him and your wife to sign it.

Doesn't have to be elaborate...

- Reg number
- "Sold As Seen"
- Amount paid in full and final settlement
- date and time

Ask to see his ID so that you can be sure he is who he says he is. He's buying a car, so presumably he'll have a driving license, right? Write his driving license number on your copy of the contract.

In the event of any problems, you can then confirm to the DVLA, police or whoever that you were not in possession of the car at the time.

Will it be a cash sale?

Before you post the transfer of ownership to the DVLA, which I's advise you send by registered post, as the DVLA have a terrible record for not receiving post. Get it photocopied for you own personal records, and get the copy dated and signed by the new owner.

Some good advice on here. Also make sure you check all the money, maybe get a money pen from your local post office and do ensure you deal with the log book (V5) and not give it to him. Some traders like to take the log book without filling it in so it is easy to move it on quickly, but get it filled in to cover your back.
