People seeking asylum is different to economic migrants ,you do know that don't you

The Ghost of '99 wrote:The UK, as a civilised country, has a responsibility to take in refugees from war-torn or destroyed and dangerous countries. The handful coming over by boat are a tiny pecentage of the number of displaced people in the world. The absolute terror they cause the red-faced, anti-British, anti-humanity brigade should be no impediment to us doing the right thing. Even the Tories used to believe that before they became a white nationalist party.

We are already failing to pull our weight, not least because our ill-advised military interventions over decades have contributed to the instability that many are escaping from.

I don't think many would be against people fleeing war or persecution being taken in by the UK ,its the economic migrants which are the majority that's the problem, if they want to come then go through the correct ways ,apply for a Visa, that way we know who is coming in and the have the necessary skills to add to our economy

Not really sure of the relevance of where the headline is from, personally would be more interested whether the headline is correct.

Sure you're not. Which is why it's so easy to get here.
Oh, hang on...

Except, of course, that they're not.

Well superglue seems to stick to be sticking with his figures, which adds weight to JonnyGiants point of view, so once again Nod it would appear that your making assumptions and half truths to suit your own agenda.

What I cannot understand is why all these people flee their own country - do they not have any fight in them? If someone tried to take over the UK would we just exit right to Eire - really?

How many displaced people should we take 500k, 1m, 5m, 10m - how do we support them all - do we provide club-class travel on jet planes to make the journey more pleasant - where are we going with this?

I'm glad that I dont live in your little world of make believe, where everyone has a pet name and yet, you dont give a stuff about the real world.
What's you secret ? Double dose of Benylin or something stronger ?

There is no such thing as an ‘illegal’ or ‘bogus’ asylum seeker. Under international law, anyone has the right to apply for asylum in any country that has signed the 1951 Convention and to remain there until the authorities have assessed their claim.

It is recognised in the 1951 Convention that people fleeing persecution may have to use irregular means in order to escape and claim asylum in another country – there is no legal way to travel to the UK for the specific purpose of seeking asylum.

The 1951 Refugee Convention guarantees everybody the right to apply for asylum. It has saved millions of lives. No country has ever withdrawn from it

I'm arguing the point that the vast majority coming over in the boats are not fleeing war or persecution, even sans frontiere moved out of the camps in and around Calais because they realized that there was no genuine refugees only sub saharan economic migrants .
As a country we will always need immigration, but we need the right type ,people who will bring skills that we are desperately short of
