I'm not sure what the repercussions would be for men not following Saddam's instructions but I bet it was far worse than what US/UK soldiers would face if they refused orders. Given Iraq's consistent human rights violations over the decades I'm probably even underestimating that. I doubt US/UK bomber pilots operated under the same amount of fear and stress yet they are able to still justify this? Isn't that just as cold-blooded a killing?
Don't take the righteous justification away from them otherwise their totally fooked.

Typical right-wing opportunism then? Nowt much changed since then, just tell everyone what they think they want to hear. Then when it comes to the end-game, hopefully it'll be someone else's problem. Lincoln left the whole sorry mess to Democrat Andrew Johnson to sort all the crap out.
Nowt much has changed really

Change right wing to left wing and you can describe the last 2 labour governments I've had the misfortune to live under in this country.

I wouldn't call it opportunism really. It was a calculated move after Antietam. Lincoln had always planned to issue the proclamation after a Union victory.
As for seeing it through, well he was assassinated with 3 years left of his term, as I am sure you know.
