Having been through a couple of pregnancies that were not straightforward (well, ok, havign stood back and watched the wife go through a couple of pregnancies that were not straightforward) and having possibly lost one in between then that was my first thought too but actually its very normal.

She isn't even twelve weeks pregnant yet and this is a very risky time, however some random doctor on the radio tonight was saying that severe morning sickness (which is the complaint being stated) can lead to dehydration in the mother and I'd guess they are keeping her in for that reason.

On the other hand lots of mothers-to-be will have gone through the whole "bed rest" thing in the early weeks, desperately trying to hang onto their newly discovered pregnancy, especially on their first - we were told in 1988 that the figure was as high as 1 in 3 who lost a very early foetus, sometimes before the pregnancy has even been discovered - its not as straightforward as many assume.

What a load of crock.

Kate has a condition that affects about one in 200 pregnancies so it isn't that unusual. Morning sickness during the first trimester is very common. What is less common is morning sickness throughout the pregnancy but that still happens. A friend of mine had three children and with each one of them she spent the whole pregnancy in hospital on a drip her sickness was that bad.

Congratulations to Kate and William. They have great timing. I was just wondering how we would manage without an extra bank holiday next year! Hopefully everything will go smoothly and we'll be enjoying another extra day off work around June time!

Re the hospital stay it is common in women who are UNDERWEIGHT and the body cannot cope with the hormonal changes.
Her attempt to be size zero or anorexia chic or whatever really skinny is these days is what has contributed to her illness.

Not exactly a good role model for young girls or expectant mothers.

Be skinny and be really ill and put your unborn child at risk.

So not sure where your pile of crock comes from.

As her doctor, should you be revealing her medical history?

A good friend of mine has a condition which means she doesn't have regular periods, if at all. Two weeks ago she discovered she's 6 months pregnant and due in February. Unfortunately for her, and more importantly the wee bairn, she's a massive drinker, a 'socialite' on the wine at lunch and every night with the soaps, and plenty of beer at the weekends. She even went to Oktoberfest.

My Mrs is currently 4 months pregnant. :D She only vomited once or twice but suffered oodles of retching - any smell would set her off. Seems to have calmed down and all going well.

Well actually that's not true. Spondylarthritis, 2 slipped discs, hypermobility and fibromyalgia and the fact a stupid consultant needlessly took her off all medication straight away means she can barely walk without crutches and is in constant agony, but fingers crossed it'll all be worth it. Baba is fine & growing nicely.

As for Kate & Wills - good luck to 'em.

The crock comes from you supposing that once she's had a baby or 2 then she will be surplus to requirements. Charlie may have been a complete lover and was in love with Camilla, but Diana did naively actually love the guy. Everything that I've read about William is that he's nothing like his father and this is a couple that do actually love each other.
