As we (most of us) are being given that day off, to celebrate something that an awful lot of us don't want to celebrate ... I propose that we designate it "Republic Day" and celebrate the view that one day, we will live as citizens with a head of state who was elected to that position.

Of course, the forelock-tuggers can have their bloody awful street parties, it's a free country after all innit?

Freedom without Socialism is privilege and injustice.
Socialism without freedom is slavery and brutality.

This sounds like a good idea we could see what has more support in the country, if more people are out celebrating Her Majesty the Queen's Jubilee or the Republic?

If you want the idea to take off you need to get a web-based / tweet campaign going. Could be interesting.

Even better, if you don't agree with the monarchy, you won't want the extra day off you're getting because of it. So you could always go into work instead.

Would be interesting to see how many people who slag the monarchy off will still accept this extra day's holiday.

I agree. We should have a "beat austerity and help the economy day". Everyone should work. That, combined with a possible BBC strike, should just about stick two fingers up to Dave and his pathetic party which advocates compulsory shirking.

If an employer is closing for the day, most employees will have little choice.

Then there are those who are self-employed: my clients will be closed – perhaps you have suggestions s to how I find a new client for a singe day's work – and make up the money that I will lose?

Not, I want to point out, that I am having a whinge about it. But your post is simplistic to say the least.

And of course all non-christians should be working on Christmas Day, Good Friday and Easter monday too?

I'll celebrate anything that gives me a day off. The Jubilee, Xmas, diarrhea, whatever.

Some people take these things way too seriously.

Easter doesn't count, its a holiday to remember St Cadbury, patron saint of chocolate derived confectionary products.
