So let me get this right. The guys visa was running out so he tried to get married to a stranger to stay in the Country. He was caught and then jailed in THIS country for a year????? Why not just send him home and black list him for any future visa applications??? Now the tax payers have to pay for him (which we were anyway as he's a student) for another year when legally he shouldn't even be here

I agree, if we'd just shot him instead, we could've saved the price of return airfare too

Depends on if you regard an element of jail time as punishment for a crime ?
If you do then just sending him back to his country of origin is no punishment at all, you've basically just wagged your finger at him, told him not to be a silly boy and paid for his flight home at which point, and given the parlous state of the border controls he could walk to the nearest BA ticket office in the airport and fly straight back again.

In theory I guess he could. Fine him his air fare then (he obv has money). His crime was paying to stay illegally so as punishment we pay to keep him here

You realise that other countries lock up foreign nationals for crimes committed on their territory, right? Or do you think it's just the 'good old British justice system' that engages in such outlandish behaviour?
He broke the law. He was caught, tried, found guilty, sentenced, and is serving time. Once he's completed his sentence he'll be deported.
I fail to see the problem TBH.

You obviously don't read the Sun, Star, Mail or Express then. He'll be living it large in some cushy nick, watching Sky TV when he's not playing on his state-supplied Wii, or lounging in the jacuzzi while quaffing mojitas

Mind you, making him live with that Hungarian wrestler he was about to marry would surely be punishment enough?

The issue of foreign nationals serving sentences in UK prisons has been in the "too difficult tray" for many years. HMCS would dearly love to repatriate them to serve their sentences in their own country. The problem is that in many countries they would be subject to far more draconian conditions than in the UK, whereas in other countries there would be no guarantee that they would serve any sentence.
Sham weddings are a fairly minor issue, the main problem is with "drug mules" who make up a significant proportion of the female prison population.
God made this earth and mankind, why do we have to live where we are told? Each and every individual must be allowed to live where ever they want and not be segregated by countries and manmade boundaries. It is not our place to determine where others can or cannot live.

Hells bells, one minute we're not locking enough people up for long enough, the next we're locking up too many for too long a time!
If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle.
